It started vaguely for me. I found a photo of Travis Fimmel looking so lovely but with some underlying attitude that I wanted to explore. I really love this photo and knew I had to write his story someday. But what was his story?
Then I found another shot of him looking so much sweeter and I knew I had to have both sides of him in this story. Attitude would protect sweet.
But why did he need protecting?
Then I discovered the Xdress.com website and all the deliciously wonderful outfits and lingerie designed and made for men to wear. What if this sweet man had a secret? What if he loved to dress up, bend his gender, but was entirely too frightened to let anyone know?
What scared him? What happened to make him hide this side of himself? I thought I needed a better reason that just betting his peers wouldn’t understand or approve. So I raised the stakes for Truman by having him get caught dressed up and feeling so fine. Caught, outed, and abandoned by everyone he thought was supposed to love him unconditionally. Then I gave him scholarships for academics and sports that he cannot attend college without, but that could be taken away from him if he isn’t vigilant about his studies and staying on the team. If he loses either scholarship, he’s homeless and alone all over again.
So I had to give Truman a love interest who’s going to shake up his world, test his beliefs, and draw him out into the light…or just push him into it.
This story involves two fraternities: Phi Delta Kappa (ΦΔΚ) is for the jocks and Gamma Lambda Nu (ΓΛΝ) is the gay frat on campus. It’s a rivalry that may never cease completely, with ΦΔΚ being restrictive and possibly even closeted, while ΓΛΝ is all-inclusive and open. Into this, I just had to play and add an actual Greek into the Greek System.
Enter Anastasius Manolis. Stasi’s a nice young man from a big family who loves to laugh. He’s protective and fierce when necessary, but his default is playful. He’s a teddy bear… Well, he’s Greek so, of course, there’s fur. I love furry men and so does Truman, but he doesn’t really want to admit that at all. Stasi’s also very determined once he sets his mind to accomplishing something and what he wants right now is athletic and beautiful Truman.
Stasi’s methods for drawing Truman out — both out of his shyness and then the closet — might seem a little bullying, but he’s worried about Truman being so isolated. No one should have to live boxed up the way Truman is and, even if it’s just around Stasi, he should be able to be himself somewhere. That getting Truman to let it all hang out means the man’s going to wear a garter belt and a dress ends up being the fantasy-come-true Stasi never knew he’d always wanted.
Of course, getting Truman to let Stasi into his life and getting Stasi all hot and bothered once he’s there were the easy parts. Not everyone will embrace Truman as he is. What happens when, suddenly, everyone knows?
